I want to spread the
word that diets don’t work—95% of those who diet and
lose weight, regain it within one to three years—and that
using a cognitive-behavioral approach to treating over- and undereating
does.
As adult learners, we can reprogram our thinking about food, eating, weight and
our bodies, we can develop effective strategies to deal with feelings rather
than eating or focusing on weight, and we can change our behavior so that it
is in sync with good physical and mental health.
My ultimate goal is to develop a not-for-profit foundation which would provide
workshops that teach “normal” eating to those without the means to
afford them—people in shelters, prisons, transitional housing, and inner-city
health and mental health centers. Becoming a “normal” eater involves
acquiring new skills which anyone can learn. But first they must have the chance!
