Here's what readers have to say about:
Fireside Books/Simon & Schuster, June 2009, ISBN 1416592644, soft cover, 272 pgs. Available from www.simonandschuster.com, from online bookstores, or ask for it at your local bookstore.
I learned a lot from reading the book. It is extremely readable, and going back the second time, I've got things to think about and journal about, and because of how the book is organized that is going to be very easy to do. If you know nothing about normal eating, you might find a unique entry into learning how and why you eat too much, too often, or when you are too upset. -- S.N. The book was a wake-up call. Now I put myself on my list of things to do each day and take much better care of myself. It's paying off big-time. Someone once told me that when you are on an airplane, the safety instructions remind you to put the oxygen mask on yourself first. Then you can help others. This is what this book is all about. -- C.V. This book is written very well and is also enjoyable to read. I saw myself in many of the women profiled. If you are a woman who does it all but neglects herself, this book is for you. Self care is not over rated and this book will help you take care of you. I know it helped me. -- A.M. Since women, at least those of us in the Western World, are socialized to be pleasers, Karen Koenig, LCSW, M.Ed. has written a wonderful book to help us save ourselves from ourselves. While the specific content of Ms. Koenig's book relates to weight management, it is applicable to all women who need a recovery program for being pleasers at their own peril. It is deceptively simple and chock full of stories to help readers see themselves in the lessons she teaches. She is a master clinician, and that comes through on every page. -- Dr. Beth Erickson, author of MARRIAGE ISN'T FOR SISSIES

I’ve read close to 100 self-help books, and this one hit home more than any other. -- S.L. There are four “rules” that “normal” eaters follow instinctively…negative thinking and unhealthy habits follow from ignoring them. An essential guide for a wide audience, from young adults and those newly on their own to caregivers and students alike. -- Midwest Book Review Provides a roadmap with step-by-step directions to normal eating. The chapter on self-care without using food is superb.-- Diane Keddy, Registered Dietician This book has become my eating bible and I tell everyone I meet how amazing and inspiring this book is. You must go out and buy this book. It will be the best $15 bucks you ever spend! -- S. I really appreciate the author's logical, common sense philosophy on eating and feel confident that with the tools provided by this book, I can retrain myself to eat normally. -- Rebecca This book answered ALL my questions in such depth. It was if the book was written about me.-- K.W.

I recommend this book to anyone who is seriously committed to breaking free of the tyranny of diets or eating disorders and is willing to do some tough emotional work. It has definitely changed my outlook on life. -- A.K. Insightful, probing, wise, instructive, loving...and so many more words can describe this workbook. Overcoming emotional eating doesn't happen from passive reading. It happens from hard work with a therapist or with this workbook. -- Linda Moran, author of How to Survive Your Diet In a lighthearted way, Karen helps us to stop and identify our feelings in order to be successful in our recovery. While many books end there, Karen takes us beyond that and provides the tools to actually achieve full recovery. This book is relaxed and supportive and can be read in chapters or just a bit at a time. -- Beth Mayer, LICSW, Executive Director, Multi-Service Eating Disorder Association I love the gentle approach of your wonderful book. It really spoke to my heart. -- R.B. Can’t fully express how much this workbook helped my daughter (and me!). From an ED point of view, it's great: doesn't allow her to "feed" into ED behaviors. My daughter has had more success after working through this book than any other workbook she's completed (and she's done a lot!)-- Anonymous

As an expert in bridging the chasm between the emotional and physical aspects of eating and weight issues, Koenig gives us a comprehensive guide to understanding and addressing these concerns that are interwoven into every aspect of our clients' lives. I love this book and have not seen anything like it out there. -- Lynne Eldridge, MD, Author of Avoiding Cancer One Day At A Time In each chapter, Ms. Koenig provides clear questions that therapists can ask and reviews the key issues of self-worth, reward and comfort, the biology and dangers of eating disorders, as well as family dynamics and the impact of phase of life-cycle issues. I own this book and have already used it to assess some of the women in my practice and research.-- Dr. LeslieBeth Wish This book has given me tools in the form of real knowledge and ways of thinking about and questioning clients to help bring eating issues into the open. After reading this book, I have a better working knowledge of not only the eating disturbances, but also the issues often underlying them. Ms. Koenig writes in a very specific and direct way that is easy to read and it’s easy to use this new knowledge. -- Lisa Oren, LICSW As a psychotherapist who has not personally experienced the difficulties of eating disorders and weight management issues, I am greatly enlightened by this book. Koenig addresses the entire gamut of interactions between food and all aspects of life including family relationships, medical issues, and individual struggles with food and normal eating. The structure of the book with the "thinking points" following each concept is an interesting technique for focusing the clinician on the important factors in each section. This is a most informative resource book for non-specialist clinicians and specialists as well. -- Sandra Z. Zellick, Ph.D.
